There are over 50 million children with and at risk of disabilities in India. This includes visible disabilities such as visual impairment, hearing impairment or cerebral palsy, and invisible disabilities such as autism, intellectual disability or learning disabilities. All children with disabilities are vulnerable and children from lower-income families, more so.
Ummeed Child Development Center was founded as an NGO in 2001 by Dr. Vibha Krishnamurthy, with the vision of helping children with and at risk of developmental disabilities reach their full potential and be included in society.
Since its inception, Ummeed has provided direct services to over 12,000 children and families at its clinic using the principles of family centred care, strengths-based approaches, biopsychosocial model, evidence-based approaches, and culturally relevant interventions (around 75% of children and families served annually are from low-income backgrounds and receive significant fee concessions).
Through its training, Ummeed is involved in training and capacity building of parents, professionals, and organizations. Over the years, Ummeed has trained about 4,400 professionals (doctors, therapists, teachers, community workers) from 25 states and 6 union territories in India and several low-income countries and indirectly reached over 2,20,000 beneficiaries
On the advocacy side, Ummeed’s team has been part of panels and taskforces for WHO, UNICEF, RCI and SSA for the Govt of India, amongst others. Ummeed’s advocacy focus has been on creating platforms for the voices of children with disabilities and their families – from getting them as speakers in conferences and faculty in Ummeed’s training programs to larger initiatives such as the Family Resource Center.
Ummeed is a 100+ member team of doctors, therapists, psychologists, mental health professionals, social workers, educators, and Support Services. Most importantly, the team includes children with disabilities, their parents, and other family members
Ummeed’s work with children is supported by institutional grants from leading foundations and corporates and through individual donations from well-wishers such as you. As a not-for-profit organization, Ummeed relies on individuals' and organizations' generosity to do more and go beyond. Your donation would make a difference! We look forward to your support!
